The Spinach Incident
Maya smoothed down her vintage bucket hat for the tenth time, checking her reflection in the cafeteria window. First proper hangout with Tyler's crew—no big deal, just the entire friend group she'd been dying to join since seventh grade.
Her palms were practically leaking sweat. Classic.
She clutched her iPhone like a lifeline, doom-scrolling through TikToks she'd already memorized to avoid looking awkward while waiting for everyone to show up at the park.
"Yo Maya!" Tyler waved from the picnic table. "Saved you a spot."
Her stomach did literal backflips. She slid onto the bench next to him, trying to play it cool. Someone had brought spinach artichoke dip from the fancy grocery store downtown. Maya's nervous stomach was doing somersaults, but she figured eating would look more natural than just sitting there like a statue.
Wrong move.
Ten minutes into the conversation about Mr. Harrison's impossible chem test, Tyler said something genuinely hilarious. Maya laughed—full, genuine laugh—and then felt the pieces of spinach stuck to her front teeth.
Her entire life flashed before her eyes.
She scrambled to check her phone camera, but her hands were shaking so badly she almost dropped it face-down on the concrete. Tyler caught it mid-air.
"You've got a little—" He gestured at his own teeth, grinning.
Mortifying. Absolutely mortifying. She wanted to dissolve into the grass. But instead of making it weird, Tyler just handed her a napkin like it was nothing. "Happens to everyone, fam. I once walked around all day with marshmallow in my hair after a bonfire."
The group didn't even pause. Someone just tossed her a water bottle and kept the story going.
Later that night, Maya flopped onto her bed, hat finally off, face burning at the memory. But when she checked her phone, there was a new group chat notification. Tyler had added her to the official squad chat.
Message from Tyler: "spinach teeth crew unite ✌️"
Sometimes the most embarrassing moments were just the ones that finally made you real.
