The Spinach Incident

My first mistake was accepting the invitation. My second was the spinach smoothie.

I stood at the edge of Maya's pool, clutching my red Solo cup like a lifeline. The pool party was everything I'd dreaded—bikinis, bass-heavy music, people who actually knew how to swim. And there was Jake, looking like he'd stepped out of a TikTok tutorial, his neon swim trunks mocking my very existence.

"Hey! You coming in?" someone called. I froze.

I'd spent hours getting ready. My mom's ancient cable-knit sweater was my armor against the world, even if it was ninety degrees out. It covered everything I wanted to hide—the scars on my arms, the body I was still learning to occupy. But now everyone was staring.

The smoothie had seemed like a good idea earlier. Healthy. Mature. My older sister was doing her green juice phase, and I wanted to be like her—confident, put-together, not the girl who panicked at pool parties. But somewhere between sips and social anxiety, I'd forgotten to check the mirror.

"Spinach," whispered Lena, my oldest friend, her eyes wide with horror. "Your teeth. Like, ALL of them."

My face burned. I could feel it—tiny green flecks decorating my smile like accidental confetti. Jake was walking over, and I had a choice: run or own it.

Something in me snapped. Maybe it was the heat, maybe it was the absurdity of it all—fifteen years old and still terrified of everything.

"It's art," I said, grinning widely at Jake. "You like it?"

He stared. Then he laughed—a real one, not mean. "Dude, your teeth are green."

"It's called chlorophyll," I said, stripping off the sweater to reveal my one-piece underneath. "Very trendy."

I jumped into the pool, spinach and all. The water shocked me into clarity. When I surfaced, Jake was cannonballing beside me, and Lena was grinning from the edge. Some girls were taking pictures of themselves, not me. The world hadn't ended.

Sometimes the most embarrassing moments are the ones that finally set you free.
