The Spinach Incident
Maya pulled her oversized beanie hat lower, wishing she could disappear into the booth's vinyl. This wasn't supposed to happen. Her crush Jordan had noticed her across the cafeteria and actually waved her over to sit with his friends.
Now here she was, at The Garden Bistro, trying to impress while everyone ordered weird fancy stuff. "Arugula and pistachio pesto," someone said. Maya just pointed at the first thing on the menu.
When her spinach-artichoke dip arrived, she was so focused on not looking awkward that she missed Jordan's joke. Everyone laughed. She laughed too, a beat late.
Her iphone buzzed in her pocket. Probably her mom asking how it was going. Maya ignored it, trying to lean in and look casual, like she belonged here.
"Your dip," Jordan said, grinning. "It's... really becoming you."
More laughter. Wait, why was he looking at her like that? His best friend Kai was practically dying.
Maya excused herself to the bathroom, heart pounding. The mirror confirmed her worst fear: a massive chunk of spinach wedged between her front teeth. Green. Obvious. Glowing.
She could just move to Antarctica. Change her name. Never return to school.
But when she slid back into the booth, Jordan didn't make fun of her. Instead, he said, "Honestly? I was terrified I'd be the one with food in my teeth all lunch. You're brave for even ordering spinach."
The tension broke. Someone else admitted they'd spilled sauce on their white shirt last week. Another person confessed they still slept with a stuffed animal.
Maybe being imperfect wasn't the end of the world. Maya took a bite of her spinach dip, feeling something like courage for the first time.
Her phone lit up again. Her mom: "How's it going?"
Maya typed back: "Actually? Kind of embarrassing but also okay."
She didn't pull her hat down again.
