The Spinach Incident

I navigated the freshman hallway like a zombie, running on three hours of sleep and pure panic. My first week at Northwood High, and I'd already managed to become invisible—which was fine, honestly. Better invisible than embarrassing.

Then came Wednesday's lunch disaster.

The cafeteria served what they called 'fresh salad' but what was basically wilted spinach that looked like it had survived a nuclear winter. I poked at it with my fork, regretting every life choice that led to this moment. My crush, Jason from AP Bio, sat three tables away, laughing with his friends. I tried to look casual, like eating radioactive greens was totally my vibe.

Then someone bumped my elbow. My tray flew. Spinach went everywhere—including all over Jason's pristine white sneakers.

The entire cafeteria went silent. I wanted to dissolve into water, just evaporate right there. But Jason didn't get mad. He just looked at his green-stained shoes, then at me, and burst out laughing.

'Nice shot,' he said. 'My mom's been trying to get me to eat vegetables for years.' His friends joined in, and suddenly I wasn't invisible anymore—I was the girl who launched a spinach projectile at the most popular guy in freshman class.

But somehow, it became my thing. People started saying hi. Jason sat with me the next day. My zombie camouflage had failed, but I'd accidentally found my people anyway.

Sometimes the most humiliating moments become your origin story. And yeah, I still hate spinach, but I learned that showing up—even when you're exhausted and terrified—is better than staying invisible.
