The Spinach Incident
Maya stared at the cafeteria tray, the spinach looking suspiciously like something that had already been eaten. This was what her life had become—sitting alone while her ex-best-friend three tables over laughed at something Jake said.
"Hey, Mindy, I mean—Maya!" Seriously, who said her name wrong every single time?
It was Jordan. Of course. The one who'd decided seventh grade meant abandoning childhood for eyeliner and the varsity bench.
"Nice spinach," Jordan smirked. "Going healthy or just... trying something new?"
Heat crawled up Maya's neck. Last week, Jordan had posted that TikTok of Maya's childhood room—with Mr. Bearwinkle, the stuffed bear she'd had since kindergarten, prominently displayed. #embarrassing #somepeoplenevergrowup had been the caption.
The cafeteria went weirdly quiet. That's when it happened—the spinach incident. Maya's fork somehow launched a piece of spinach directly into Jordan's hair.
Silence. Then laughter. Jordan's laughter.
"Oh my god, that's actually hilarious," Jordan said, pulling the green leaf out. "Remember when we tried to make my little brother eat that kale smoothie and he threw it at your ceiling?"
Maya blinked. This was not the script.
"Yeah," Maya found herself saying. "Your mom made us clean it for, like, an hour."
Jordan sat down. Uninvited. "So. About the bear thing. Jake dared me to post it and I... it was dumb. I was dumb."
The spinach incident became their inside joke again. By lunch period on Friday, they'd sat together, discussing whether high school would really be as terrifying as everyone said, or if that was just something older kids said to mess with them.
"We're good, right?" Jordan asked as the bell rang.
"We're good," Maya said, and for the first time in months, it wasn't a lie. Some friendships could bear the weight of growing up. The others? They were worth fighting for, spinach mishaps and all.
