The Spinach Incident
Maya's first week of freshman year wasn't going exactly according to plan. The high school social pyramid was way more complicated than middle school, and she'd already accidentally sat at the seniors' table twice. But none of that compared to what happened on Tuesday.
She'd been staring at Jake from across the cafeteria for three days straight. Jake Rodriguez, varsity baseball player, hair that defied gravity, and a smile that made Maya's stomach do actual gymnastics. Her friends had dared her to talk to him, and Maya, fueled by teenage confidence and terrible judgment, had agreed.
The problem was lunch. She'd been eating her mom's "healthier options" phase, which meant a salad with way too much raw spinach. But Maya was focused on her mission. She practiced her casual approach in her head: "Hey Jake, nice game last night" - simple, cool, totally normal.
Except when she finally worked up the courage to approach his table, something felt wrong. Jake was already looking at her, but not with the interest she'd hoped for. More like... concerned?
"Hey," he said, and then pointed awkwardly at his own teeth. "You've got a little..."
Maya froze. She sprinted to the bathroom mirror, and there it was - a massive, bright green piece of spinach wedged between her front teeth like some kind of vegetable monument to her humiliation.
She hid in the bathroom for twenty minutes, missing half of sixth period, calculating the probability of ever showing her face at school again. (Spoiler: it was zero).
But later that day, she found a note in her locker. "Spinach happens. Want to sit with us at lunch tomorrow? - Jake" Maybe the social pyramid wasn't as rigid as she thought. Maybe sometimes the most embarrassing moments became the best stories. And maybe she'd finally switch to ranch dressing instead of the green stuff.
