The Spinach Incident

sphinxbearspyspinach

Marcus thought he was being smooth, leaning against the cafeteria wall in what he hoped was a casual stance. He wasn't technically stalking her — okay, maybe borderline spy behavior — but he needed to know if Maya sat at the same table every day, or if there was a pattern he could work with.

The school mascot, a giant bronze bear that nobody actually liked, loomed behind him like a judgmental roommate. Marcus adjusted his hoodie for the fiftieth time. His palms were sweating. This was pathetic.

He'd finally gathered the courage to talk to Maya yesterday. She'd been reading a book about Egyptian mythology, something about the riddle of the Sphinx, and Marcus — desperate for conversation — had somehow managed to sound like he knew what he was talking about.

"So, what's your deal with the Sphinx?" she'd asked, eyes bright with actual interest.

"Oh, you know," he'd said with a confidence he absolutely did not feel. "Ancient wisdom. Mystery. The whole aesthetic."

She'd laughed. It was the best sound he'd heard in his entire sixteen years of existence.

Now he was going to redeem himself. Properly this time. No fake Sphinx expertise. Just authentic Marcus energy.

He grabbed his tray — overpriced pizza, a carton of chocolate milk, and a side salad he'd only ordered because it looked healthy — and headed toward her table. His heart hammered. This was it. The moment.

"Hey, Maya," he said, sliding into the seat across from her like he'd done this a million times before. "What's that book about?"

"The Sphinx's riddle," she said, flipping a page. "About how what you're looking for might be staring you in the face the whole time."

"Deep," Marcus said. "I like deep."

She laughed again, and everything was perfect. Everything was going according to plan. He was killing this. He was cool. He was charming. He was —

"Marcus," she said, her expression shifting to something between horror and amusement. "You have... um... spinach. Like, a lot of it."

He froze. The salad. The healthy choice.

"Every time you talk," she added, "more falls out."

He ran to the bathroom.

But later, when his phone buzzed with a message from Maya — Nice save today, Sphinx boy — he figured maybe the embarrassment was worth it. Sometimes the universe gives you spinach moments to remind you that being smooth is overrated anyway.
