The Spinach Incident
Maya's hair refused to cooperate that morning. She'd spent twenty minutes trying to tame the frizz, but it had other plans—like making her look like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Perfect. Just what she needed for lunch with Lucas, the cute junior who'd finally noticed her after two years of existing in his general vicinity.
The cafeteria smelled like desperation and tater tots. Maya picked at her tray, her stomach doing that nervous flutter thing that made her feel like she might puke. Lucas sat across from her, actually talking to her, actually looking at her like she was a person worth knowing. He was wearing that orange hoodie she'd seen him in a million times, but somehow it looked different today. Better. Or maybe that was just her brain being delusional.
"So," Lucas said, leaning in. "I heard what Jordan said about you in chem. That was such bull."
Maya froze. She had spinach in her teeth. She KNEW she had spinach in her teeth. She could feel it lodged there like a tiny green monster mocking her entire existence. This was fine. Everything was fine. She could power through this.
"Yeah," she managed, keeping her lips sealed tight. "Jordan's dramatic."
Lucas laughed, and it was this amazing sound that made her chest feel weird. He reached across the table and—oh NO, this was happening—his hand brushed against hers. His palm was warm and slightly sweaty and it was literally the best thing that had ever happened to her. But instead of being cool about it, instead of playing it chill like any normal human being, Maya choked. Literally choked.
A piece of spinach flew out of her mouth. It landed on the table. They both stared at it.
"That's... embarrassing," she squeaked.
But Lucas? Lucas just laughed. Not mean laughing. The good kind. He picked up a napkin, wiped the spinach away like it was no big deal, and suddenly Maya realized something: maybe perfection wasn't the point. Maybe the messy, awkward, spinach-filled moments were actually the ones worth remembering.
"Still want to get milkshakes after school?" he asked, grinning like he knew something she didn't.
Maya smiled back, spinach disaster be damned. "Absolutely."
