The Spinach Incident

Maya's summer plan was bulletproof: reinvent herself before sophomore year, become one of those effortlessly aesthetic wellness girls, and finally get Tariq to notice her. The timeline was ambitious, but she was committed.

The first step was the green smoothies. Every morning, she'd blend kale, spinach, and some weird powder her mom bought, trying to look like she'd been doing this forever instead of just since Tuesday. But Buster, their ancient Labrador who had zero respect for personal growth, had developed concerning interest in her morning routine.

"Buster, NO," she hissed, shoving him away with her foot as he tried to nose her phone off the counter. She was trying to film her first wellness TikTok—a "get ready with me" situation that was supposed to make her look natural and effortless, not like she was constantly fighting off a 80-pound dog who'd eat anything that wasn't nailed down.

The vitamin gummies were the next disaster. Her mom had bought these massive ones that looked like regular candy, which Maya thought was perfect for sneaking nutrition into her day. But Buster had somehow figured out how to open drawers, and now she'd caught him twice trying to chew through the bottle.

"You're literally going to turn into a nutritional supplement," she told him, dragging him away from the pantry by his collar.

The real disaster happened at Jasmine's party that Friday. Maya had spent two hours getting ready, practicing her new relaxed laugh in the mirror, and she was finally going to talk to Tariq. She'd even brought her own green juice because she was "that girl now." Everything was going according to plan—until Buster somehow escaped the backyard, followed her scent to the party, and chose that exact moment to crash through the back gate.

Tariq had just smiled at her. He'd JUST said "Hey Maya, I love your—" when Buster went full cartoon mode, knocking over three drinks and somehow ending up with Maya's spinach smoothie all over his face.

"Oh my GOD," someone shrieked. "Is that SPINACH?"

Maya's face burned. This was it. This was how she died.

But then Tariq started laughing. Not mean laughing—like, actually losing it. "Your dog just face-planted in your health juice," he gasped. "That's iconic."

Buster, delighted by the attention, shook spinach-speckled drool everywhere like confetti.

Maya looked at her perfect aesthetic dreams, covered in dog and green sludge, and started laughing too. Something about the sheer disaster of it all broke whatever weird spell she'd been under all summer.

"He's technically my mom's dog," she told Tariq. "And that smoothie tasted like grass anyway."

"Thank god," he said, still grinning. "I thought you were actually into that stuff."

Later, as she dragged a spinach-stained Buster home, Maya caught her reflection in a shop window—hair wild, shirt spattered with green, dog weaving around her legs like he'd just won the lottery. She looked nothing like the aesthetic wellness girl she'd planned to become.

For the first time all summer, she didn't care. Let other people curate their perfect lives. She was the girl whose dog ruined parties and whose smoothies tasted like grass, and apparently that was enough.

Besides, Buster was currently licking what was left of a vitamin gummy off her wrist, and honestly? That was kind of iconic too.
