The Spinach Champion of Palm Cove

Barnaby was a small bear with very big dreams. Every morning, he climbed to the top of the tallest palm tree in Palm Cove, looking out at the sparkling blue ocean. I'm going to be brave today, he told himself. Just you wait and see!

But Barnaby wasn't brave at all. He was scared of everything. Especially the huge grumpy bull who lived in the meadow. Bruno the bull would stomp his hooves and snort clouds of dust, and all the little animals would run away. Even the birds stopped singing when Bruno came near.

One afternoon, Barnaby was practicing padel against the cave wall. Swish! Swish! His wooden paddle hit the ball again and again. But the bull watched from behind a bush, his dark eyes curious.

You're holding it wrong, Bruno rumbled, stepping forward.

Barnaby nearly dropped his paddle. But then he noticed something—Bruno wasn't angry. He was sad.

Nobody ever plays with me, Bruno said softly. They're all scared of my horns.

Barnaby's heart did a little flip. I'll play with you!

They played padel until sunset, laughing as Bruno accidentally hit the ball into a coconut. But Bruno was hungry and his tummy rumbled loudly. That's when Barnaby remembered—his grandma's special spinach patch grew just beyond the dunes.

Spinach makes you STRONG, Barnaby promised, leading the way. Grandma says it gives you magic powers!

Bruno wrinkled his nose. I don't like spinach.

Just try ONE leaf, Barnaby begged. For me?

Bruno chewed. And chewed. Then his eyes went wide. I feel... TINGLY!

That night under the stars, they made a pact. Every day, they would eat spinach together and practice padel. And Bruno? He stopped being grumpy. He discovered that making friends felt better than being scary. The animals of Palm Cove weren't afraid anymore—they lined up to play padel with the kindest bull in the whole wide world.

Sometimes, Barnaby thought, the bravest thing you can do is give someone a chance. Even if they seem scary at first.

And sometimes? Just sometimes? That someone becomes your very best friend.
