The Spinach Between Her Teeth

The divorce papers were sitting on the kitchen counter, unsigned, for three weeks. Elena found herself **running** along the waterfront at 6 AM every morning, her trainers hitting the pavement in a rhythm that felt more like escape than exercise. Forty-two years old and starting over—the phrase had become a mantra she repeated with each breath.

At the club afterward, Carlos waved her over to the **padel** court. His smile was warm, uncomplicated. He didn't know about the papers. He just knew she'd been showing up alone lately, hitting balls against the wall until her shoulders burned.

'You've got spinach between your teeth,' he said, after their match. His thumb grazed her lower lip, and she almost flinched.

They ended up at his place. He made her an omelette—**spinach**, feta, pine nuts—and she thought about how Marcus had never learned to cook anything that didn't come with microwave instructions. Carlos had spinach in his own teeth when he smiled across the table. She didn't tell him.

'You're running from something,' Carlos said, not accusingly. He'd noticed. Of course he'd noticed.

Elena looked at this man who was kind, available, who made her laugh over breakfast. And she thought about going home to sign those papers, to the empty side of the bed, to a life she'd outgrown years ago but was too afraid to leave.

'Something,' she said. 'And toward something else.'

The spinach between his teeth seemed suddenly, overwhelmingly charming. For the first time in months, she wasn't thinking about running at all.
