The Spinach Algorithm
Leo's summer took a turn when the pizza place hired him. His parents were hyped—he'd finally stop 'rotting on his phone' and learn 'real responsibility.' Whatever that meant.
The job wasn't terrible, except for the spinach special. Mrs. Chen was convinced it would be the next big thing. 'Healthy but still pizza!' she'd say, sliding another tray into the oven while Leo swept up flour.
'It's literally just spinach on cheese,' he'd mumble. But people actually ordered it. Which was weird.
But the real drama happened after his shift. Leo would hurry home, fix himself a spinach smoothie (because now he was obsessed with antioxidants or something), and boot up his computer. The cable in his neighborhood was trash—internet cut out every ten minutes like clockwork.
He'd sit in his room, router blinking frantically, trying to reconnect. During one of these outages, he discovered something: the WiFi signal from next door was unprotected.
That's when he became a spy.
Not, like, a cool spy. More like 'accidentally connected to his crush's family printer' spy. But still.
Through the glitchy connection, he could see Maya's Spotify playlists. Her homework documents. The fact she was into the same obscure indie band he'd been lowkey obsessed with since freshman year.
He felt creepy. But also... obsessed? It was like getting a cheat code for someone's brain.
The spinach smoothies became a ritual. He'd drink them while scrolling through Maya's digital footprint, feeling like a total villain. The internet got faster, but he kept 'accidentally' connecting to her network.
Until the day he knocked on her door.
'Hey,' he said, holding a container of spinach pasta from the restaurant. 'My boss made me bring this over. Said your family ordered it?'
Maya stared at him. 'We didn't order anything.'
'Right. Okay. Um.' Leo's brain glitched. 'I noticed your WiFi signal is unprotected. Just thought you should know. For security.'
She laughed. It wasn't mean. 'You're the pizza guy, right? You're always staring at your phone during delivery runs.'
Leo froze. She'd noticed him noticing her.
'I'm not great with technology,' she said. 'Maybe you could help me fix it sometime?'
The spinach special could wait. This was going to be interesting.
