The Sphinx Who Wore Rainbow Hair

Leo sat alone under the swaying palm tree in his new backyard, wishing for a friend. His family had just moved to sunny Florida, and everything felt strange and lonely. Nobody knew his name, and he was too shy to introduce himself.

"Psst!" whispered a tiny voice from above. "Your palm is tickling my nose!"

Leo looked up. Perched on a palm frond was the most extraordinary creature he had ever seen - a miniature sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, with the body of a fluffy lion, magnificent wings, and long, flowing rainbow-colored hair that shimmered like soap bubbles in the sunlight.

"You... you're a sphinx!" Leo gasped.

"And you're my new friend!" declared the sphinx, fluttering down to land gently in Leo's open palm. "I'm Cleopatra - Cleo for short. I've lived in this palm tree for three hundred years, waiting for someone with a kind heart to find me."

Cleo's magical hair changed color with her emotions - pink when she was happy, blue when she was thoughtful, and gold when she used her special powers.

"I can grant one wish," Cleo said, her hair turning a thoughtful purple, "but only if it helps someone else. What would you wish for?"

Leo thought carefully. He could wish for toys, or games, or to be the fastest runner in school. But he remembered how lonely he felt, and how much he wanted a friend.

"I wish for the courage to make new friends at school," Leo said, his voice soft but brave.

Cleo's hair burst into brilliant golden light. "Your wish is granted! And here's my secret - the best way to make friends is to BE a good friend first. Listen when others talk. Share what you have. Help when someone is sad. Stand up for kids who are bullied."

The next day at school, Leo saw a girl sitting alone at recess. He remembered Cleo's words and sat beside her. "Hi, I'm Leo. Do you want to play?"

Her name was Maya, and they became best friends. Leo made many more friends that year by following Cleo's advice. And every afternoon, he would visit the palm tree to tell Cleo all about his adventures, her rainbow hair glowing pink with happiness.

Leo had learned something magical - the sphinx's secret was that true friendship isn't found by wishing for it. It's made by being kind.
