The Sphinx Who Wanted to Spy
Melody was a very small sphinx with very big, very wild purple hair that stuck out in every direction like fireworks. Most sphinxes sat on stone pillars and asked riddles to passing travelers. But Melody didn't want to ask riddles. She wanted to be a spy.
Every night, she read spy adventures under the moonlight while the other sphinxes slept. She practiced tiptoeing and hiding behind rocks. She even made herself a spy hat from a large papaya leaf she found near the river.
One evening, while running through the Whispering Forest on a practice spy mission, Melody discovered something wonderful. A tiny papaya tree stood in a moonlit clearing, and hanging from its branches were dozens of glowing golden papayas, each shining like tiny suns.
Melody knew she should find a hiding spot and spy on whoever came to visit this magical tree. So she crouched behind a fern and waited.
But she waited a very long time, and her legs got tired. Her purple hair was getting tangled in the branches. Just as she was about to give up, a small fox emerged from the bushes.
"Are you spying on the papayas too?" asked the fox cheerfully.
Melody jumped. "I'm a real spy!" she insisted. "Spies don't talk to foxes."
The fox laughed. "These papayas are for sharing. That's why they glow. They taste like sunshine and friendship."
Melody's tummy rumbled. She hadn't eaten all day because spies didn't stop for snacks. But she really was hungry.
"Would you like one?" the fox asked.
Melody stepped out from behind the fern. She took a bite of the golden papaya, and it was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted.
"I learned something today," Melody said, her purple hair shining in the moonlight. "Being a spy means missing out on all the fun. I think I'd rather be a friend."
And that night, the little sphinx and the fox shared papayas and told stories under the stars, which was much more magical than any spy mission could ever be.
