The Sphinx Who Wanted to Splash
High atop the oldest mountain in Egypt lived a sphinx named Zara. She had the body of a golden lion and the face of a wise young girl. For three thousand years, she had guarded the magical starlight pool—a shimmering blue pond that reflected the dreams of children across the world.
But Zara had never made a friend. Everyone who climbed her mountain would run away, frightened by her riddles and her lion tail that swished with a mind of its own.
One starry night, a small brown dog with floppy ears scrambled up the rocky path. His name was Barnaby, and he wasn't frightened at all. When Zara appeared from the shadows and asked, "What has legs but cannot walk?" Barnaby simply wagged his tail and barked happily.
"A table!" guessed Zara, surprised. "You're the first to answer correctly without running away!"
Barnaby ran circles around her, then dashed toward the glowing pool. He loved water! The sphinx watched nervously as the dog prepared to dive in.
"Wait!" cried Zara. "That pool holds children's dreams! You'll—"
SPLASH!
Barnaby surfaced with a giant grin, paddling happily. But something magical happened. The pool didn't ripple like ordinary water. Instead, it sparked with tiny stars, and golden bubbles floated up carrying sweet lullabies from sleeping children everywhere.
Zara stepped closer, amazed. The dog's joy had turned the pool of dreams into a pool of fun.
"Friend," she whispered softly, testing the word. Barnaby swam to the edge and nudged her paw with his wet nose.
That night, the ancient sphinx learned the greatest lesson of all: wisdom isn't just about knowing answers—it's about knowing when to stop asking questions and start making splashes. And from that day on, Zara and Barnaby guarded the starlight pool together, turning children's dreams into adventures they could share.
