The Sphinx Who Wanted a Friend
Lily's pet goldfish, Finnegan, was not an ordinary fish. Every night when the moon rose, he would swim to the surface of his bowl and whisper secrets in a bubbling voice.
"Tonight's the night, Lily!" Finnegan said one evening. "The Sphinx of Stardust Valley is waiting for us."
Lily rubbed her eyes. Was she dreaming? But when she touched Finnegan's bowl, golden light swirled around her room. Suddenly, she wasn't in her bedroom anymore. She stood in a meadow filled with sparkling flowers that chimed like tiny bells when the wind touched them.
There, perched on a crystal rock, sat the Sphinx. But this sphinx wasn't scary like in storybooks. She had soft lavender fur and wings like a butterfly, and her eyes shone like twin moons.
"I've been waiting centuries for someone to find me," the Sphinx said sadly. "Everyone runs away because they think sphinxes only give impossible riddles. But I just want a friend."
Just then, enormous footsteps shook the ground. A massive bull with golden horns thundered into the valley. Lily trembled, but to her surprise, the Sphinx smiled.
"This is Barnaby!" she said. "He's my friend too."
The bull knelt down gently. "Don't be afraid, little one. I may look fierce, but I'm really quite cuddly."
Lily giggled as Barnaby nuzzled her hand with his soft nose. The three new friends spent the night sharing stories and chasing stardust butterflies.
"You know," Lily said as dawn approached, "grown-ups always tell us to judge things by how they look. But tonight I learned that friends can be found in the most unexpected places — even a lonely Sphinx and a giant bull!"
The Sphinx nodded wisely. "And sometimes," she added with a wink, "even a little goldfish holds the biggest magic."
When Lily opened her eyes, she was back in her room. Finnegan swam in his bowl, looking very much like an ordinary goldfish. But Lily knew better. True friends, she realized, don't need to look magical to be magical.
