The Sphinx Who Swam with Lightning
Emma loved stormy nights. While most children hid under their covers, she pressed her nose against the window, watching the sky dance.
One evening, lightning struck the old museum downtown. Emma's dog, Barnaby, started barking like crazy—something he never did. "What is it, boy?" she whispered.
Barnaby led her through the rainy streets to the museum garden. There, beside the broken lightning rod, sat a small stone sphinx. But this sphinx wasn't like the statues in books. She was no bigger than a cat, with tiny wings that shimmered like rainbows.
"You came!" the sphinx squeaked. "I've been stuck on this pedestal for three thousand years. That lightning finally broke my spell!" She did a little happy dance, then froze. "But... I have a problem. I need to reach the Magic Pond across the city before midnight, or I'll turn back to stone forever. And I can't swim."
Emma's eyes widened. "I can help!"
"But it's storming," the sphinx worried. "What if there's more lightning?"
"Lightning is beautiful," Emma said. "And Barnaby loves swimming. He can help you!"
Barnaby barked and jumped in a puddle.
The sphinx smiled. "I'm Cleo. What's your name?"
"Emma. This is Barnaby."
They raced through the rain—Cleo flying just above the ground, Emma and Barnaby splashing through puddles. When they reached the Magic Pond, it glowed with an unearthly blue light.
Cleo trembled. "The water looks so deep."
Emma knelt beside her. "Sometimes scary things are the most wonderful. Barnaby will swim with you. I'll hold your paw."
Hand in paw—or rather, hand in claw—Cleo stepped into the water. Barnaby paddled alongside, encouraging her with happy barks. Suddenly, lightning crackled above, striking the center of the pond. But it wasn't scary. The water sparkled with tiny stars, and Cleo began to glow.
"I'm doing it!" Cleo laughed, swimming gracefully now. "I'm really swimming!"
That night, Emma learned something important: courage doesn't mean not being afraid. It means being scared but doing something anyway. And sometimes, the best adventures happen when you help a friend face their fears.
Cleo never turned back to stone. She visits Emma and Barnaby every storm, and they all go swimming together under the lightning, which isn't frightening at all—it's magical.
