The Sphinx Who Swam Among Stars
Lily was a girl who loved to look at the stars. Every night, she'd press her nose against her window and wonder what was happening up there in the sparkly darkness.
One especially starry night, something magical happened. A creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise girl appeared right outside Lily's window! It was a sphinx, but not like the scary ones in stories. This sphinx had fur the color of sunset and wings that shimmered like moonbeams.
"Hello!" said the sphinx, whose name was Zephyr. "I'm swimming among the stars tonight, and I seem to have lost something very important."
"Swimming?" Lily asked, her eyes wide with wonder. "But there's no water in the sky."
Zephyr laughed, and the sound sparkled like tiny bells. "Of course there is! Star-water, made of wishes and dreams. Look!" And she showed Lily how she could paddle through the air as if it were a giant, glittery pool.
"What did you lose?" Lily asked, becoming her friend right then and there.
"My special star vitamin," Zephyr sighed. "It's a glowing stone that gives me the magic to sky-swim. Without it, I can't spread happy dreams to children who need them."
Lily grabbed her flashlight and climbed out the window. "I'll help you find it!"
Together they searched through the star-water, past the moon's toe dip pond and around Saturn's hula hoop rings. Finally, they found it - caught in a lonely cloud's fluffy grasp.
"Why did you take it?" Zephyr asked gently.
The cloud looked ashamed. "I wanted a friend to swim with me. Everyone floats away because I'm too big and clumsy."
Lily had an idea. "Maybe we can ALL swim together!"
And so they did - Lily, the sphinx Zephyr, and the cloud (whose name was Nimbus) spent the rest of that glorious night swimming through the star-water, laughing and turning cartwheels through constellations.
Before morning came, Zephyr pressed the star vitamin into Lily's hands. "Keep this safe. Whenever you need a friend, just hold it tight, and we'll come swimming through your dreams."
Now Lily knows that the best magic isn't found in glowing stones or star vitamins. The true magic is friendship - and the wonderful way it turns strangers into the best of friends, especially when you're swimming among stars together.
