The Sphinx Who Swam

Leo couldn't believe his eyes. There, floating in the middle of the neighborhood pool, was a small golden sphinx. The mythical creature had the body of a lion and the head of a human, complete with mysterious Egyptian headdress. But what was a sphinx doing in a swimming pool in Ohio?

The sphinx dipped her paw in the water, creating tiny ripples that sparkled like diamonds.

"I'm Cleo," she said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "And I've traveled all the way from Egypt because I heard children here swim for fun. In my desert home, water is more precious than gold."

Leo nodded politely, though his mind was racing. His baseball team, the Desert Foxes, had a game in twenty minutes. If he didn't leave now, Coach Miller would bench him.

"Will you teach me to swim?" Cleo asked, blinking her large amber eyes. "I've never been in water before. My paws are made for sand, not swimming."

Leo looked at the sphinx, then at his watch, then back at the sphinx. His team needed him. But Cleo looked so hopeful, so brave for asking.

"I have to be at my baseball game," Leo said. "But my friend Sam is here. She's the best swimmer on our swim team. I bet she'd love to teach you."

Cleo's eyes twinkled. "You would give up your glory to help a stranger?"

Leo shrugged. "My team has other players. You don't have anyone else."

The sphinx smiled and suddenly vanished, leaving behind a golden baseball that glowed with ancient magic.

"For your kindness," her voice echoed, "whenever you need courage or friendship, just hold this ball and remember: true champions help others first, win second."

Leo arrived at his game just in time, his pocket warm with the magic baseball. That day, he hit three home runs and made new friends with every player on both teams. And sometimes, when he held his golden ball, he could hear distant splashing and happy laughter—Cleo, finally learning to swim.
