The Sphinx Who Sneezed Lightning
Lily was eight years old and loved exploring her grandmother's overgrown garden. One rainy afternoon, she discovered something magical behind the blackberry bushes — a stone sphinx with golden eyes!
But this sphinx wasn't like the ones in books. This one was SNEEZING!
"ACHOO!" The sphinx's sneeze shot tiny lightning bolts across the garden. "CHOO!" More sparks scattered like fireflies.
"Bless you!" Lily called out, ducking under a rosebush.
The sphinx blinked, surprised. "Oh my! A human who can see me? My name is Zephyr, and I've been guarding this garden for three thousand years. But I've caught a terrible cold from all this rain."
"Why are you sneezing lightning?" Lily asked, fascinated.
"It happens when sphinxes get sick," Zephyr explained sadly. "I need my special medicine, but the fairies who make it are away on holiday."
Lily remembered something. "My mom gives me vitamin C when I'm sick! Maybe that would help?"
Zephyr's golden eyes widened. "Sphinx vitamins are very different... but you're very kind to offer."
Lily rushed inside and returned with an orange, which she'd learned was full of vitamin C. "Here! This is nature's vitamin!"
The sphinx took the orange with giant paws. As Zephyr ate it, something magical happened. The lightning sneezes stopped! The sphinx's fur began to shimmer like the sun. Golden energy swirled around them.
"I feel WONDERFUL!" Zephyr exclaimed. "Your kindness was the real magic all along. That orange had more power than any fairy medicine!"
The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with a paw. "Now you can understand what all animals are saying. It's my gift to you."
Lily heard the garden come alive — birds singing about the warmest branches, bees dancing directions to the sweetest flowers, even the old oak tree whispering stories.
"Thank you, Zephyr!" she hugged the sphinx's giant paw.
"No, thank you, little friend," the sphinx purred. "You taught me that sometimes the best magic comes from the simplest things — a vitamin, a kindness, and a new friend."
From that day on, Lily visited Zephyr every afternoon, and together they shared stories, oranges, and the special magic of friendship that shines brighter than any lightning storm.
