The Sphinx Who Saw Through Me
Maya pulled her snapback down low, trying to disappear into her locker. 'You're doing the thing again,' her best friend Kai said, leaning against the neighboring door. 'The bull in the china shop energy. You're literally vibrating, Maya.'
'Shut up,' she muttered, though her face burned. 'I'm just... processing.'
'Processing your crush on Jordan? Nah, you're overthinking it. Just talk to them.' Kai checked his phone. 'Or don't. But watching you orbit around them like a nervous moon is painful.'
Maya peeked through her locker door. There they were – Jordan, with their effortless cool and friends who always seemed to be laughing at inside jokes. Maya felt conspicuously not cool in her oversized hoodie and scuffed Vans.
At lunch, Maya spotted a new girl sitting alone near the windows. Something about her made people give her space – maybe the intense way she observed everything, like she was analyzing social dynamics for a thesis. Someone had nicknamed her 'the Sphinx' behind her back.
'She knows,' the Sphinx said when Maya accidentally made eye contact.
Maya blinked. 'What?'
'About Jordan. You look at them like they're holding your missing rib.' The Sphinx's voice was quiet but certain. 'They're in my English class. They're genuinely nice. Also, they like your haiku from the poetry unit.'
Maya's brain short-circuited. 'They... remember that?'
'People think I'm mysterious,' the Sphinx continued, 'but really, I just notice things. Jordan notices things too.' She tilted her head. 'You could just say hi. Worst case, they're polite. Best case...' She shrugged, leaving it hanging.
'Maybe,' Maya said, though her stomach did that familiar flip.
The Sphinx raised an eyebrow. 'Or you could keep wearing that hat like emotional armor. Your call, bull in a china shop.'
Maya straightened. Something about being seen so clearly – by a stranger, no less – made her feel braver. She took off her snapback, shaking out her curls.
'You're right,' she said, surprised by her own voice. 'I'm going to talk to them.'
The Sphinx nodded once. 'Good. They're sitting over there. Looking vaguely lost, actually. Like they're waiting for something.'
Maya walked toward Jordan, her heart hammering. Behind her, she heard Kai's triumphant whoop. The Sphinx just watched, eyes knowing, like she'd already seen how this ended.
'Hey,' Maya said, sliding onto the bench across from Jordan. 'I like your shoes.'
Jordan looked up, surprised. Then they smiled. 'Thanks. I like your... everything.'
Later, Maya would learn that the Sphinx's name was Raven, and she'd been quietly matchmaking all semester. But in that moment, with Jordan's genuine smile and Kai grinning from across the cafeteria, Maya felt like she'd finally stepped out of the china shop and into something real.
