The Sphinx Who Saved Summer

One scorching July afternoon, ten-year-old Leo discovered something extraordinary behind the old oak tree. A small stone sphinx, no bigger than a soccer ball, peered up at him with emerald eyes.

"Hello, little friend," Leo said softly.

The sphinx's wings fluttered - stone becoming soft, golden feathers. "I've been waiting for someone like you, Leo. I'm Sophie."

"You know my name?" Leo gasped.

"I know many things. And you look like someone who could use some swimming."

"Not the pool again," Leo groaned. "Mom makes me practice every day."

"Not that kind of swimming." Sophie tapped Leo's forehead. "Close your eyes."

The world tilted. When Leo opened them, they stood before a shimmering lake that reflected stars even though it was daytime.

"Welcome to the Forever Summer," Sophie announced. "Where it's always baseball weather."

They waded into water that felt like warm honey. In the middle of the lake, a baseball diamond floated on lily pads.

A figure emerged from the deeper water - green skin, seaweed hair. Leo's heart raced.

"That's just Barnaby," Sophie said. "He's a water zombie, but he's our water zombie. He loves baseball."

Barnaby shambled forward gently. "Play... ball?" he gurgled.

Leo stepped to the plate. Barnaby pitched with surprising grace, the ball - a perfect sphere of polished pearl - curving through the air. Leo swung with all his might and - POP! - the pearl dissolved into a hundred butterflies.

"Home run!" Barnaby cheered, his zombie grin surprisingly warm.

For hours they played: Leo, Sophie the sphinx, and Barnaby the zombie who wasn't scary at all, just lonely.

When Sophie said it was time to leave, Leo felt tears coming.

"You'll see us again," Barnaby promised, pressing a pearl into Leo's hand. "Real pearls don't come from oysters. They come from friendship."

Leo woke up under the oak tree, the stone sphinx beside him, no longer moving. But in his pocket, a pearl glowed with underwater light.

That night, Leo pressed the pearl to his ear and heard distant splashes and laughter.

Leo fell asleep smiling, dreaming of sphinxes and zombies and the true meaning of friendship: finding magic in the most unexpected places.
