The Sphinx Who Saved My Life
I was basically a zombie freshman year. Not the cool apocalypse-fighting kind — the kind that shuffles through AP Chemistry with zero brain cells, surviving on caffeine and existential dread.
Then Leo moved in next door.
He was senior, in a band, and had a sphinx cat named Pharaoh. Yeah, a hairless cat that looked like an alien wrapped in wrinkles. First time I saw it sitting on his porch, I literally choked on my Starbucks.
"That's a cat?" I asked, trying to play it cool even though my brain was short-circuiting.
Leo laughed, and his smile did things to my stomach that were definitely not covered in health class. "Pharaoh's a sphinx. They're basically naked cats. Super chill."
That's how it started — me hanging at Leo's, listening to his band practice, petting this weird naked cat while pretending I understood half their music references. Pharaoh would sprawl across my lap like a wrinkly heater, purring like a tiny motorboat.
I stopped feeling like such a zombie. Turns out having a crush gives you way more energy than three Red Bulls.
Then came the disaster: Leo's band got a gig at the local venue, and Pharaoh escaped. Like, full-on jailbreak through an open window. I found Leo literally crying in his front yard, holding a missing cat poster like it was his final exam.
"We can't play without our mascot," he said, and I swear my heart did this weird little seizure thing.
So obviously I volunteered to help. We spent three hours checking neighbors' yards, calling "Pharaoh!" like idiots, until we heard something weird from behind the old Thompson house. A tiny, raspy meow.
The sphinx was stuck in a tree, looking like a wrinkly potato and judging us both.
Leo climbed up (he'd played it off like it was nothing but I saw him shaking) and handed the cat down to me. Pharaoh latched onto my jacket like a angry monkey, and Leo jumped down and his face was SO close to mine and I forgot how to breathe.
"You're awesome, you know that?" he said.
I probably said something dumb. But honestly? Worth it.
The band crushed their show. I stood front row with Pharaoh in a carrier (yes, I became the weird cat carrier girl, no regrets) watching Leo absolutely kill it on stage. When they finished, he pointed at me from stage and grinned.
My zombie days were officially over. Being awake is way better.
