The Sphinx Who Padel
Lily loved exploring the dusty attic of her grandmother's old house. Rain pattered against the roof as she climbed the creaky wooden stairs, her flashlight cutting through the dim light.
Behind a stack of faded books, something shimmered. Lily reached in and pulled out a small golden figurine—a tiny sphinx no bigger than her hand, with emerald eyes that seemed to twinkle.
"Hello there," she whispered.
The sphinx stretched its wings and yawned. "Finally! Someone found me! I've been stuck behind those boring encyclopedias for sixty years!"
Lily gasped. "You can talk?"
"Of course I can talk! I'm a magical sphinx." The creature fluttered into the air. "I'm Cleo. What's your name?"
"Lily. Are you... real?"
Cleo did a loop-de-loop. "Very real. And very lonely. I used to be guardian of the Pharaoh's royal padel court, but now I'm just trapped in this dusty attic. No one to play with, no one to talk to."
"Padel?" Lily tilted her head. "Like the game?"
"Exactly! But magical padel, with balls that change color and rackets that glow in the dark." Cleo swooped closer. "Teach me how the children play padel now, and I'll show you real magic. Deal?"
Lily's eyes widened. "Deal!"
For the next hour, Lily showed Cleo videos of padel matches on her tablet. The sphinx watched with fascination, asking questions about scoring, serving, and teamwork.
"Friendship," Cleo said thoughtfully. "That's the most important part, isn't it?"
Lily nodded. "Yeah. You can't really play alone."
"Then you're my first friend in sixty years." Cleo landed softly on Lily's shoulder, her warm weight like a tiny feather. "And friendship is the greatest magic of all."
From that day on, whenever Lily played padel with her school friends, Cleo would hide nearby, invisible and watching. Sometimes, when Lily made an especially good shot, she'd see a tiny golden spark from the sidelines.
Because now Lily knew something wonderful: even the smallest, most unexpected friends can teach you the biggest lessons. And magic is real—you just have to know where to look.
