The Sphinx Who Loved to Swim
Lily's grandmother had the strangest garden statue—a tiny stone sphinx with butterfly wings, perched on the edge of the old fish pond. Every evening at sunset, Lily would sit beside it and whisper stories about her day.
One particularly hot afternoon, Lily dipped her feet in the cool water. Suddenly, ripples shimmered around the sphinx statue. Stone cracked like a peanut shell. A creature no bigger than a cat tumbled out—golden fur, wise violet eyes, and those butterfly wings fluttering frantically.
"Finally!" the sphinx shook water from her whiskers. "I've been waiting ages for someone to swim with me!"
Lily's jaw dropped. "You're alive? And you like swimming?"
"I'm Auria, the Swimming Sphinx of the Silver Lagoon!" She did a joyful backstroke. "But I'm trapped in this pond until someone beats me at a game."
Aurora pointed her tail toward an old wooden paddle floating near the water's edge. "Fetch that padel, and we'll play Water Ball. If you win, I can teach you the secret of underwater breathing. If I win... you have to help me find my way home to the stars."
Lily grabbed the paddle. "You're on!"
They played until fireflies blinked awake. Lily splashed and swung, while Auria swooped and dived like a golden fish. Finally, Lily made the perfect shot—splat! Right into Auria's paws.
"You won!" Auria chirped, doing a happy spin. "Now, close your eyes and hold your breath."
Lily squeezed her eyes shut. Auria touched her forehead with the magical padel. Suddenly, Lily could breathe underwater! She opened her eyes and gasped—she was swimming beside a glowing golden sphinx in a world of rainbow coral and singing fish.
"Every night," Auria whispered, "I'll meet you here. We'll explore kingdoms beneath the waves, where sea turtles tell ancient stories and mermaids weave dreams into pearls."
And so, every summer evening, Lily and Auria swam together, discovering that the best adventures begin with an impossible friend and a game played by the light of the setting sun.
