The Sphinx Who Loved to Splash

Barnaby was not an ordinary dog. He was a golden retriever with one ear that always flopped sideways and a tail that never stopped wagging. Every morning, Barnaby would explore the woods behind his house, sniffing for adventures.

One Tuesday, something peculiar happened. While sniffing around the old pond, Barnaby spotted a creature he'd never seen before. It had the body of a lion, the head of a human, and enormous wings folded against its sides. It was a sphinx—but this sphinx was only the size of a cat!

"Hello there," said the sphinx in a voice like tinkling bells. "I'm Cleo."

Barnaby's tail thumped happily. "I'm Barnaby! What are you?"

"I'm a sphinx," Cleo sighed. "But I'm not very good at it. All the other sphinxes love asking riddles and sitting very still on pedestals. But me?" She looked longingly at the sparkling pond. "I want to go swimming."

Barnaby's ears perked up. "Swimming? That's my favorite thing!"

"Sphinxes aren't supposed to swim," Cleo said sadly. "We're supposed to be wise and mysterious. Not wet and splashy."

Barnaby thought about this. Then he had an idea. "What if being yourself is the wisest thing of all?"

Cleo's eyes widened. "You really think so?"

"I know so!" Barnaby splashed into the pond, paddling happily. "Come on!"

Timidly, Cleo dipped one paw in the water. Then another. Soon, the little sphinx was doggy-paddling beside Barnaby, her wings floating on the surface like golden leaves. She laughed—a sound like rain on a tin roof.

From that day on, Barnaby and Cleo were best friends. They swam together every morning, and Cleo even started asking riddles—but only fun ones, like "What has four legs and bounces?" ("A happy dog!")

The other sphinxes thought Cleo was very strange. But Cleo didn't mind. She had learned something wonderful: being yourself might be the bravest adventure of all.
