The Sphinx Who Loved to Run

In the golden desert of ancient Egypt, there lived a young sphinx named Cleo. Unlike the other sphinxes who sat still and solemn, guarding treasures and asking riddles, Cleo had a secret: she loved running.

Every morning when the sun painted the dunes orange, Cleo would wait until her elders were asleep, then she would stretch her lion paws and her eagle wings, and go running across the sand. She loved the wind in her fur and the feeling of freedom.

One day, while running her favorite route near the river Nile, Cleo heard something crying. She followed the sound to find a young bull named Barnaby stuck in the mud.

"Don't worry!" Cleo called. "I'll help you!"

Using her strong lion body, she pulled and pushed until Barnaby was free.

"Thank you!" said Barnaby, shaking mud from his spotted coat. "I was chasing a butterfly and didn't see the mud. I'm Barnaby."

"I'm Cleo," she replied proudly. "And I love running!"

"Me too!" Barnaby exclaimed. "Would you like to run together?"

From that day on, every morning at sunrise, Cleo and Barnaby would run together — the sphinx and the bull, an unlikely pair. The other sphinxes frowned, saying sphinxes should be serious and still. But Cleo didn't care. She had found something better than fitting in: she had found a friend who accepted her exactly as she was.

One evening, when they returned from running, they found the village children gathered around a large stone. "It's stuck!" cried a little girl. "We can't move it to build our new playground!"

Cleo and Barnaby looked at each other and smiled. Using the strength they'd built from all their running, together they pushed the stone to just the right spot.

"You two are the best team!" cheered the children.

Cleo learned that day that being different wasn't bad at all. Sometimes, the things that make us unique are exactly what the world needs.
