The Sphinx Who Loved Swimming
Lily discovered the secret pond on the hottest day of summer. The water sparkled like diamonds, and she couldn't resist jumping in for a swim.
That's when she heard it—gentle splashing coming from behind the weeping willow. Curious, she crept closer to spy through the hanging branches.
There, splashing happily in the moonlit water, was a sphinx! But not like the ones in books—this sphinx had fluffy golden fur, big friendly eyes, and was wearing a bright red bathing cap.
"I saw you spying!" the sphinx laughed, shaking water from her mane. "I'm Cleo, and this is my favorite swimming pool."
Lily's eyes widened. "But... sphinxes are supposed to guard treasures and ask riddles!"
"That's my sister," Cleo said with a wink. "I'm the fun one. Want to see my treasure?"
Cleo reached into the water and pulled out an old hat—dripping wet but still beautiful. "My best friend lost this here fifty years ago. She was sad because she thought it was gone forever. Every night, I swim and search for it."
"Why not just use magic?" Lily asked.
"Because some things matter more when you work for them," Cleo said softly. "Friendship, kindness, keeping promises—those are the real treasures."
Lily understood. That night, she helped Cleo return the hat to its owner, an elderly woman who still lived nearby. The woman cried happy tears, and Cleo beamed with pride.
Now every summer, Lily returns to swim with her sphinx friend. And together, they always keep their eyes open—just in case someone needs their help.
Because magic isn't just about spells and splashes. It's about caring enough to make a difference, one small kindness at a time.
