The Sphinx Who Loved Swimming
Lily was the best spy in her third-grade class. She could sneak extra cookies without her mom noticing, and she once discovered where her teacher hid the extra stickers. But tonight, Lily was spying on something much bigger.
While visiting her grandparents in Egypt, she'd spotted a mysterious blue light coming from the Great Pyramid. Most kids would be scared, but Lily grabbed her flashlight and snuck out the window.
The desert sand was warm between her toes as she tiptoed toward the ancient pyramid. Suddenly, the ground beneath her gave way! Whoosh!
Lily found herself sliding down a secret tunnel... and landed with a SPLASH in an underground pool.
"Who goes there?" a riddle-voice echoed through the darkness.
Lily wiped water from her eyes. Before her sat a small, friendly sphinx — just the size of a golden retriever, with sparkly blue eyes and a mane that shimmered like moonlight.
"I'm Lily," she said, swimming toward the creature. "Are you the guardian of this pyramid?"
The sphinx giggled, flipping happily in the water. "I'm Cleo! And yes, I guard the ancient Library of Dreams. But mostly, I just love swimming!"
Lily laughed. "A swimming sphinx?"
"The ancient pharaohs built this hidden pool for me," Cleo explained. "For 3,000 years, I've been swimming here all alone. Being a guardian is lonely work."
That's when Lily understood. Cleo wasn't a monster from scary stories. She was just lonely — just like Lily sometimes felt when she had to move to new schools.
"Can I swim with you?" Lily asked.
Cleo's eyes lit up like stars. "Forever?"
"For tonight," Lily promised. "And I'll come back every summer. We can be friends."
They spent the night swimming and playing. Cleo showed Lily ancient murals that came to life in the water — dancing hippos, soaring falcons, boats sailing on imaginary seas. They laughed until their sides hurt.
As dawn approached, Lily knew she had to leave. "I'll be back," she promised.
Cleo nuzzled her hand. "I believe you, friend. Because you didn't come to spy or steal. You came to share."
Lily snuck back to her grandparents' house, her heart full of magic. She realized the best adventures aren't about discovering secrets — they're about making friends.
And every summer after that, the best spy in third grade returned to Egypt, where a certain sphinx was always waiting, ready for another night of swimming beneath the pyramid stars.
