The Sphinx Who Loved Swimming

In the golden desert of Egypt, where pyramids touched the clouds, lived a young sphinx named Cleo. Unlike all the other sphinxes, Cleo didn't care about riddles or guarding ancient tombs. Instead, she loved two things the others thought were strange: swimming and growing spinach.

Every morning, while the other sphinxes practiced their riddles, Cleo would sneak away to a hidden oasis she had discovered. Its crystal-blue water sparkled under the sun, and around its edges grew the most delicious, emerald-green spinach.

"Sphinxes belong in the sand, not the water!" her grandmother would scold. "And spinach is for rabbits, not magnificent creatures like us!"

But Cleo couldn't help herself. There was something magical about the way the water embraced her when she dove in, her lion paws paddling gracefully, her eagle wings folded tight against her body. The cool water felt like a friendly hug on hot desert days.

One afternoon, Cleo was swimming when she heard tiny splashing sounds. A small lizard named Pip was struggling in the water, caught in a current!

Without thinking, Cleo swam faster than she ever had before. She reached Pip just as he was about to go under the waterfall. Her strong paws grabbed him gently, and she carried him to safety on the grassy bank.

"Thank you!" squeaked Pip. "I was so scared. I was just trying to reach some of that delicious spinach growing by the water."

Cleo smiled and offered him some of her fresh spinach leaves. Pip's eyes lit up. "This is the best spinach I've ever tasted! You must be a wonderful swimmer to reach the best patches."

"I guess I am," Cleo said softly. For the first time, she felt proud of being different.

Word spread across the desert about Cleo's rescue. When her grandmother heard how Cleo's swimming had saved a life, her eyes filled with tears of pride.

"Perhaps," her grandmother said, "being different isn't so bad after all. Your swimming gave you something more valuable than any riddle — the ability to help others."

From that day on, Cleo swam proudly, teaching other young sphinxes that it was okay to be themselves, no matter how different they might seem. And sometimes, just sometimes, a few brave sphinxes even joined her for a swim and a snack of crunchy, delicious spinach.

The end.
