The Sphinx Who Loved Spinach

Lily stared at the swimming pool in her backyard. The water sparkled under the summer sun, but she was afraid. She didn't know how to swim.

"You look like you need an adventure," said a voice from behind the roses.

Lily jumped. There, perched on a garden gnome, was a tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten. Instead of a human face, she had the face of a wise old grandmother, and her fur shimmered like gold dust.

"I'm Cleo," the sphinx said. "And you're Lily. I've been watching you."

"You can talk?" Lily gasped.

"I can do many things," Cleo said mysteriously. "But right now, I'm hungry. Do you have any spinach?"

"Spinach?" Lily wrinkled her nose. "That's gross."

Cleo laughed, a sound like wind chimes. "Oh, my dear little one. Spinach contains the most powerful vitamin in the world — the vitamin of courage!"

"Vitamin of courage?" Lily's eyes widened.

"Indeed!" Cleo nodded. "One bite, and you'll feel brave enough for anything. Even swimming!"

Lily ran to the kitchen and returned with a bowl of fresh spinach leaves. Cleo ate them daintily, then did a somersault in the air.

"Delicious! Now," Cleo flew to the pool's edge, "it's your turn."

Lily took a deep breath and ate a spinach leaf. It tasted... good! Like earth and sunshine. Suddenly, her tummy felt warm, and her fear melted away.

Cleo took her hand. "Together now!"

They stepped into the pool. Cleo showed Lily how to kick, how to float, how to glide through the water like a mermaid. The sphinx swam beside her, leaving trails of golden bubbles.

"I'm doing it!" Lily laughed, splashing happily. "I'm swimming!"

"See?" Cleo smiled. "The real magic wasn't in the spinach. The vitamin of courage was inside you all along. You just needed to believe."

That summer, Lily and Cleo swam every day. She even started eating spinach at dinner — not for magic, but because it made her strong. And whenever she felt scared of anything new, she remembered: the bravest adventures begin with a single bite of courage.
