The Sphinx Who Loved Spinach
Emma had always dreamed of exploring Egypt, and finally, her parents had brought her to visit the great pyramids. As the sun began to set, Emma wandered away from the tour group, drawn by a strange glowing light near the Sphinx. The enormous stone creature seemed to be winking at her!
"Hello there, young explorer," rumbled the Sphinx in a voice like distant thunder. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me. Are you hungry? I could really use some spinach."
Emma's eyes went wide. "Spinach? But you're a magical statue!"
The Sphinx laughed, and smoke puffed from its stone nose. "Even magical guardians need their vegetables! Spinach gives me the strength to protect the pyramids. My grandmother always said, 'Leafy greens make the guardian keen.'"
Emma pulled a bag of spinach leaves from her lunchbox—she'd packed extra because she loved the healthy green stuff. The Sphinx's eyes sparkled as it ate every leaf.
Suddenly, dark clouds gathered overhead. Lightning flashed across the sky, striking the pyramid's peak! The Sphinx grabbed Emma's hand just in time as a secret door opened in the pyramid's side.
"Inside! Quickly!" the Sphinx urged.
They rushed into a hidden chamber filled with ancient treasures—but most amazing of all was a magical fountain of sparkling water that flowed upward instead of down.
"This is the Life Water," the Sphinx explained. "It flows from the heart of the pyramid, giving life to all of Egypt. The lightning's energy recharges it each storm. You, Emma—with your kindness and willingness to share your spinach—have proven yourself worthy of knowing this secret."
The Sphinx dipped a small crystal vial into the upward-flowing water and handed it to Emma. "Keep this always. When you're scared or lonely, just remember: magical friendships come in unexpected forms, and sharing—even something as simple as spinach—can unlock the greatest adventures."
Emma hugged the Sphinx's stone leg. "I'll never forget you."
"And I'll never forget your spinach," the Sphinx winked.
As Emma found her way back to her worried parents, she clutched the crystal vial, knowing that magic was real, and sometimes the best adventures started with being kind—even to hungry stone guardians who loved their vegetables.
