The Sphinx Who Loved Spinach
Seven-year-old Leo discovered the magical creature behind Mr. Henderson's garden center. Between the tomato plants and lettuce rows sat a miniature sphinx, no bigger than a garden gnome, with emerald wings and fur the color of sunset.
Leo had brought his lunch—fresh spinach from his mother's garden—when he spotted the sphinx crying.
"What's wrong?" Leo asked, sitting beside the tiny creature.
The sphinx looked up with golden eyes. "I'm hungry, and the only food I love is spinach leaves from a child's garden. But I'm too shy to ask."
Leo smiled. "I have plenty!" He offered his spinach sandwich.
The sphinx's face lit up. She ate the spinach delicately, purring like a kitten. "I'm Cleopatra," she said between bites. "I guard this garden from bad bugs."
Leo came back every day with spinach. Soon, Cleopatra told him wonderful stories: how she helped flowers bloom, how she danced with fireflies at night, how she had once lived in a pharaoh's garden in Egypt.
One afternoon, Leo found Cleopatra looking sad. "What's wrong?"
"The garden needs magic," she said. "The tomatoes aren't growing. Without magic, Mr. Henderson might sell this land."
Leo frowned. "But you have magic!"
"I need help," Cleopatra explained. "I need a friend to share their spinach magic with me."
Leo nodded solemnly. "I'm your friend, Cleopatra."
Together, they planted spinach seeds in a circle around the garden. As they worked, Leo felt a warm tingle in his hands. Cleopatra's emerald wings glowed brighter.
"Grow!" they shouted together.
Suddenly, spinach sprouts shot up, sparkling with tiny stars. The magic spread through the garden. Tomatoes turned red and plump. Sunflowers stretched toward the sky. Even the weeds transformed into colorful flowers.
Mr. Henderson came running. "What happened?" His eyes widened at the flourishing garden.
Leo shrugged, smiling. "Just a little spinach magic."
That evening, Cleopatra whispered, "Thank you, Leo. You're the best friend a sphinx could ever have."
Leo patted her soft head. "And you're the best friend I could ever have too."
Every summer, Leo visited the garden. He always brought spinach, and Cleopatra always had a new adventure waiting. Together, they learned that the best magic of all wasn't in plants or spells—it was in friendship.
