The Sphinx Who Loved Spinach
Lily discovered something extraordinary behind her grandmother's garden. Between the rosebushes and the old oak tree stood a miniature sphinx, no bigger than a garden gnome, with tiny paws and mysterious emerald eyes.
"I've been waiting for you," the sphinx said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I'm Cleo, and I need your help."
Lily knelt down, her heart pounding with excitement. "What kind of help?"
Cleo pointed toward the vegetable patch. "I'm hungry for fresh spinach, but I can't leave my post. I guard something very special."
"What do you guard?" Lily asked.
"A secret swimming pool," Cleo whispered. "Magical waters that make you brave when you're scared, strong when you're weak, and wise when you're confused. But first, you must solve my riddle."
Lily nodded eagerly. "I'm ready!"
Cleo's emerald eyes sparkled. "What has to be broken before you can use it?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at the garden, at the eggs in the chicken coop, at the sunshine filtering through leaves. "An egg!" she exclaimed.
Cleo did a little spin of joy. "Correct! Now bring me spinach, and I'll show you the secret."
Lily ran to the garden and gathered the freshest, greenest leaves. Cleo munched happily, then led Lily through a hidden path between two ancient stones. There, sparkling in dappled sunlight, was a tiny pool no bigger than a bathtub, filled with water that shimmered like liquid diamonds.
"Just one dip," Cleo promised, "and you'll carry its magic forever."
Lily dipped her toes in the cool water. She felt courage surge through her like sunshine. She felt wisdom settle in her heart like a warm stone. She felt strength flow through her like river currents.
"Thank you, Cleo," Lily said, feeling different—braver and stronger than before.
"Remember," Cleo whispered, "true magic isn't in the water. It's in being brave enough to try new things, kind enough to help others, and curious enough to solve life's riddles."
Lily visited Cleo every summer, bringing spinach and swimming in the magical pool. And whenever she felt scared or unsure, she remembered the tiny sphinx's wisdom: the real magic was inside her all along.
