The Sphinx Who Loved Spinach

Lily was running through her grandmother's garden when she spotted something peculiar behind the spinach patch. It was tiny—no bigger than a kitten—with the body of a lion, wings of a falcon, and a human face.

"Greetings," the creature spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Zephyr, the Garden Sphinx."

Lily knelt down, her eyes wide. "Grandma said sphinxes are only in stories!"

"We hide where wonder lives," Zephyr said, sniffing the air. "Is that... spinach?"

Lily giggled. "You like spinach?"

"Love it!" Zephyr's wings fluttered excitedly. "In my homeland, spinach grants magical powers. But here, it just tastes delicious."

Lily plucked a fresh leaf and offered it. Zephyr nibbled it delicately, then did a happy spin.

"Want to be my friend?" Lily asked. "I can bring you spinach every day!"

"Friendship must be earned," Zephyr said mysteriously. "Solve my riddle first: What runs but never walks, has a mouth but never talks?"

Lily thought hard, running possibilities through her mind. Then she smiled—her grandma had just taught her this! "A river!"

"Correct!" Zephyr's golden eyes sparkled. "You are clever and kind. A true friend."

"Can we go on adventures together?" Lily asked.

Zephyr stretched his tiny wings. "Hop on! But hold tight—sphinx flying is faster than running!"

Lily climbed onto Zephyr's back, and whoosh! They soared above the garden, racing the wind. They saw the world from above: trees like emerald umbrellas, flowers like colorful gems, and her grandmother's house like a cozy dollhouse.

"The best adventures," Zephyr said as they landed, "are shared with friends."

"And magical creatures who like vegetables," Lily added, hugging her new friend.

That day, Lily learned something wonderful: the best friendships are the ones that surprise you—especially when they come with wings, riddles, and a love for spinach.
