The Sphinx Who Loved Snacks

Lily was running through her grandmother's garden, her bare feet pressing into the warm grass. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. She loved this time of day, when the garden felt magical and anything seemed possible.

Behind the giant palm tree, something golden caught her eye. Lily stopped running and crept closer. There, curled up among the fallen fronds, was a small creature with the body of a cat and the tiny head of a person. It had soft golden fur and wings that shimmered like rainbows.

"A sphinx!" Lily gasped.

The little sphinx looked up with worried eyes. "Please don't tell anyone," she squeaked. "I'm supposed to be guarding a treasure in Egypt, but I got lost and I'm very hungry."

Lily's heart went out to the creature. "I can help! What do sphinxes eat?"

"In my homeland, we eat special leaves from the desert plants," the sphinx said sadly. "But here, everything smells different."

Lily thought for a moment. "Wait here!" She dashed to the garden where her grandmother grew vegetables and came back with a handful of bright green leaves. "Try this spinach! It's fresh from the garden."

The sphinx took a tiny bite and her eyes grew wide. "It's perfect!" She ate happily while Lily sat beside her, watching the stars appear.

"Thank you for helping me," the sphinx said. "I was scared and alone, but you showed me kindness even though I'm different."

"Grandma says helping others is the bravest thing you can do," Lily smiled.

The sphinx's wings began to glow. "You have a kind heart, Lily. For your help, I'll give you something special." She touched her paw to Lily's forehead, and suddenly Lily could understand what all the garden creatures were saying.

"Now you'll never be lonely," the sphinx whispered, and with a sparkle of golden light, she disappeared.

Lily sat under the palm tree, listening to the crickets sing and the flowers whisper goodnight. She knew that kindness was the greatest magic of all.
