The Sphinx Who Loved Secrets
Lily loved secrets. She was the best secret-keeper in her class, which was probably why the Sphinx had chosen her.
One hot afternoon, Lily was swimming in the cool blue water of Crystal Lake when she noticed something strange. A golden Sphinx sat on the mossy bank, watching her with wise amber eyes. Its stone paw reached out, palm up, as if waiting for something.
"I need a little spy," the Sphinx rumbled, its voice like distant thunder. "Someone small and brave to help me solve a mystery."
Lily dried her dripping hair on her towel and stepped closer. "What kind of mystery?"
"The moon has disappeared from the night sky," the Sphinx said. "Without the moon, the stars are lonely, and the ocean tides are confused. Will you help me find it?"
Lily nodded solemnly. She was small, but she was brave. She was also very good at noticing things that others missed.
The Sphinx touched Lily's forehead with its paw, and suddenly Lily could see in the dark—and she could fly! She soared over forests and mountains, over sleeping towns and quiet valleys, searching everywhere for the missing moon.
Finally, she found it hidden inside a giant cave, tucked away by a grumpy wizard who thought the moon was too bright. But when the moon saw Lily, it smiled and slipped free, floating up into the sky where it belonged.
The Sphinx was waiting when Lily returned. "You found it! The world thanks you, little spy."
"I wasn't spying," Lily said. "I was helping."
"Ah," the Sphinx nodded wisely. "Sometimes the best secrets aren't the ones we keep, but the ones we share with friends who need them."
Lily waved goodbye as the Sphinx faded into golden sparkles, leaving behind only a small white moonstone in her palm. She kept it safe, a reminder that even the smallest person can make the biggest difference—and that the best adventures are the ones we share with friends.
