The Sphinx Who Loved Riddles
Lily was running through her backyard when something magical happened. Her golden dog, Buster, and her orange cat, Whiskers, were chasing each other around the old oak tree. Suddenly, the air shimmered like sparkling sugar.
A creature appeared — not scary, but wonderful. It had the body of a lion, huge wings like a golden eagle, and the face of a wise grandmother. A sphinx!
"Welcome, young friends," the sphinx said in a voice like warm honey. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."
Buster wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. Whiskers, being a cat, pretended she wasn't impressed, but her green eyes grew wide with wonder.
"I am Cleopatra," the sphinx continued. "Long ago, I loved children and their pets. I have been sleeping for thousands of years. You woke me with your laughter."
Lily's heart raced with excitement. "Are you... real?"
"As real as friendship," Cleopatra smiled. "I have a gift for you — but first, you must answer my riddle."
The sphinx's riddle was tricky but fair. Lily thought hard. Buster tilted his head. Whiskers purred thoughtfully. Together, they figured it out!
"Correct!" Cleopatra cheered. "Your reward is this: whenever you need courage, just call my name. I'll be here in your imagination, always."
Lily hugged the sphinx's warm paw. Buster licked her nose. Even Whiskers rubbed against her golden wing.
"Remember," Cleopatra whispered as she began to fade, "the best adventures are the ones you share with friends — and the ones you find in your own backyard."
That night, Lily fell asleep with a smile, dreaming of sphinxes and riddles, knowing that magic exists for those who believe in wonder and friendship.
