The Sphinx Who Loved Papayas
Leo loved his grandmother's garden. Every summer, the magical papaya tree grew the sweetest, sunniest fruit anyone had ever tasted. But tonight, the sky turned dark purple. Storm clouds gathered like giant pillows bumping together.
CRACK! Lightning flashed across the sky, painting it bright white. Leo jumped. Then something amazing happened. Where the lightning struck the garden, a creature appeared. It wasn't scary like the monsters in storybooks. It was small, with soft golden fur and tiny wings. It had the face of a wise cat but the body of something magical—a sphinx!
"Hello," the sphinx said, her voice like jingle bells. "I am Cleo. I smelled something wonderful."
Leo's eyes went wide. "You're a sphinx! Are you real?"
Cleo laughed, spinning in a little circle. "As real as papayas! I followed the lightning here because my tummy was rumbling. That delicious smell—is it from that orange fruit?"
Leo looked at the papaya tree. Grandma had said they'd pick the fruit tomorrow morning for breakfast. But Cleo looked so hungry, her little tummy making tiny thunder sounds.
"Yes," Leo said. "That's a papaya. Would you like some?"
Cleo's eyes sparkled like stars. "Oh, yes please!"
Leo picked the ripest papaya, its skin bright orange like a sunset. He sliced it open, revealing golden flesh speckled with black seeds—like tiny night sky dots. Cleo took a bite and her wings fluttered.
"This tastes like sunshine and magic!" Cleo cheered. "Thank you, Leo. You have a kind heart."
Leo smiled, feeling warm inside. "Grandma says sharing makes everything taste better."
Celo nodded wisely. "She's right. Kindness is the strongest magic—stronger than lightning!" She sprinkled glitter from her wings onto Leo's hands. "For sharing with me, here's a gift. Whatever you plant will grow extra fast."
The lightning storm cleared, revealing a rainbow. Cleo flew up, disappearing into the clouds like a disappearing dream. Leo looked at his glittery hands, then at the papaya tree. Tomorrow, he would plant more seeds—and share them all.
