The Sphinx Who Loved Papayas

Lily loved her backyard more than anywhere in the world. Her favorite spot was the old swimming pool behind the garden wall—it hadn't held water in years, but it held secrets instead.

One sunny morning, Lily peeked over the crumbling edge and gasped. A tiny sphinx the size of a kitten sat in the dry pool bottom. Unlike the stone ones in books, this one had soft golden fur and wings like a hummingbird.

"Hello there!" it said in a voice like wind chimes. "I'm Cleo. Would you happen to have a papaya?"

Lily's curly hair bounced as she nodded. "Mama bought some at the market yesterday!"

She rushed to the kitchen and returned with the brightest orange papaya she could find. Cleo's eyes sparkled as Lily lowered it down. The sphinx took a delicate bite and sighed happily.

"Delicious! You've saved me," Cleo said. "I've been stuck in this pool for three days, waiting for someone kind enough to share their breakfast."

"Why were you stuck?" Lily asked, sitting on the pool edge.

Cleo explained that she guarded something precious—a golden fish with scales like sunshine who could grant one wish to anyone with a truly pure heart. But the fish lived in the magical water that used to fill this pool, and without the right offering, Cleo couldn't summon it back.

"The papaya was the key!" Cleo announced. "Watch!"

The sphinx closed her eyes and whispered ancient words. The dry pool bottom began to shimmer. Water appeared, sparkling like liquid stars. And there, swimming gracefully, was the most beautiful goldfish Lily had ever seen.

"You may make one wish," Cleo told Lily gently.

Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything—toys, adventures, even to fly. But she looked at her hair, always tangling and getting in her way, and wished instead for something that would help others.

"I wish that anyone who comes to this pool will find exactly what kindness they need to share."

The goldfish swam three times around the pool and disappeared in a flash of golden light. The water remained, clear and welcoming.

"That," said Cleo, "was the wisest wish anyone has ever made."

From that day on, Lily and Cleo became the best of friends. Together, they helped everyone who discovered their magical pool find their own way to be kind. And whenever they celebrated, they always shared papayas—the fruit that had started it all.
