The Sphinx Who Loved Papaya
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden in Jamaica. The most magical tree was the papaya tree, with its golden fruits hanging like lanterns from the sky.
One rainy afternoon, Lily found something strange beneath the papaya tree. It wasn't a cat or a dog. It was a small stone sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, with emerald eyes that sparkled like tiny stars.
"Hello," said the sphinx. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to solve my riddle."
Lily's heart pounded with excitement. "What's the riddle?"
The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "I have a golden heart but no voice. I give sweetness to those who wait. What am I?"
"A papaya!" Lily shouted. "The golden papaya!"
"Correct!" The sphinx did a happy little dance. "For solving my riddle, I'll show you something special."
The sphinx led Lily behind the garden shed, where an old cable lay coiled like a sleeping snake. But this wasn't just any cable—it shimmered with rainbow colors.
"This is the Imagination Cable," the sphinx explained. "It connects to the most magical place in the world."
The sphinx pulled the cable, and suddenly, a tiny door appeared in the air! Inside was a classroom where children from all over the world were learning, laughing, and making friends.
"This is the School of Dreams," the sphinx said proudly. "I guard the entrance. The papaya tree gives me the magic to open it."
Lily gasped. "Can I visit?"
"Only if you promise something," said the sphinx seriously. "When you grow up, you must help other children find their dreams too."
"I promise!" Lily said without hesitation.
That day, Lily learned that the best magic isn't in spells or potions. It's in helping others, keeping promises, and never losing your sense of wonder.
Every summer, Lily returns to her grandmother's garden. And every time, the little sphinx is there, waiting with a fresh riddle and a ripe papaya, ready for another adventure in the School of Dreams.
