The Sphinx Who Loved Papaya
Lily discovered the secret on a Tuesday afternoon while eating her snack by the pond. She'd just peeled a bright orange when she heard the splash.
There, sitting on a lily pad, was a tiny sphinx no bigger than her papaya. The creature had wings the color of sunrise and eyes that twinkled like morning dew.
"Are you real?" Lily whispered, setting down her orange.
The sphinx stretched its wings. "I've been waiting for someone who shares," it said, nodding at the papaya in Lily's hand. "I've slept on this lily pad for three hundred years, dreaming of papaya."
Lily broke off a piece and offered it. The sphinx's eyes widened with wonder.
"I'm Cleo," the sphinx said between bites. "And you're my first friend."
That was the beginning of the most magical summer ever. Every day, Lily brought papaya and orange slices to the pond. Cleo told her stories of ancient Egypt, where sphinxes once guarded treasures. But Cleo had always been different - she'd wanted friendship, not gold.
One especially hot afternoon, Cleo taught Lily the water song. It was a melody that made droplets dance and ripples spiral into shapes.
"You're special, Lily," Cleo said. "Most children would have been scared. You shared instead."
Lily smiled. "My grandma says true friends find each other."
As summer faded, Cleo grew weak. The pond was drying up.
"I need water, little friend," Cleo whispered. "Or I'll turn back to stone."
Lily's heart broke. She carried water in her pockets, in her shoes, in her lunchbox. But it wasn't enough.
Then she had an idea. Lily dug a channel from the creek to the pond. Her whole class helped, bringing buckets and hoses. The water flowed in like silver ribbons.
Cleo splashed with joy. "You're the best friend ever!"
That night, under a full moon, Cleo did something amazing. She touched her paw to the water, and the pond turned into liquid orange and papaya sweetness. It became a magical place where lonely children could find friends.
Lily visited every day until she was old and gray, and she always brought orange and papaya. Because some friendships are worth keeping forever, no matter how big or small you are.
