The Sphinx Who Loved Papaya
Lily's grandmother had the most magical garden in all of Mexico. But the most magical thing wasn't the flowers that sang or the butterflies that glowed like tiny moons. It was what lived behind the old papaya tree.
One sunny morning, Lily was picking ripe papayas for breakfast when she heard a sniffle. A very large, very lion-like sniffle.
"Hello?" Lily called, peeking behind the broad green leaves.
There sat a sphinx—a magnificent creature with the body of a golden lion and the head of a wise, kind-faced woman. But this sphinx had tears in her great amber eyes.
"Nobody wants to play with me," the sphinx sighed. "I've been sleeping in this garden for three thousand years, and not once has anyone asked me to play padel."
"Padel?" Lily giggled. "You play padel?"
"The Great Sphinx was the padel champion of all Egypt!" The sphinx puffed out her furry chest proudly. "I could serve a ball right over the pyramids!"
Lily had never played padel, but she loved trying new things. "I'll play with you!"
The sphinx's face lit up like sunshine. She clapped her paws together, and suddenly, a glass-walled padel court appeared right there in the garden, floating three feet above the grass.
"But first," the sphinx said, "we need energy for a proper match." She nudged a perfect papaya toward Lily. "The ancient players always ate papaya before games. It makes you swift as a desert wind."
They shared the sweet, orange fruit, laughing as juice dripped down their chins. Then they played padel until sunset—Lily using a small racquet the sphinx magicked for her, and the sphinx serving balls that sparkled like stars.
Lily lost every point, but she didn't care. She had made the most wonderful friend.
"Same time tomorrow?" Lily asked as the magical court faded away.
"I wouldn't miss it for all the treasure in the pyramids," the sphinx purred.
That night, Lily drifted to sleep with papaya dreams and padel plans, knowing that sometimes the best friends are found in the most unexpected places—and that trying new games can lead to magical friendships.
