The Sphinx Who Loved Padel
Lily discovered the hidden court while exploring behind the old museum. It wasn't an ordinary padel court — the glass walls shimmered with golden light, and the ball seemed to glow when it hit the ground.
"Hello there!" a riddle echoed through the court.
Lily spun around. Perched on the court's edge was a small sphinx, no bigger than a cat, with sparkling emerald eyes and tiny wings that fluttered like hummingbirds.
"I'm Cleo," the sphinx said. "And I've been waiting years for someone to play padel with me!"
Lily laughed. "You know padel?"
"The ancient Egyptians invented it!" Cleo winked. "Well, something like it. Care to play?"
They played until sunset. Cleo was terrible at first — her paws were too big, and she kept answering in riddles instead of calling the score. But Lily taught her how to serve properly, and Cleo taught Lily the most important lesson of all.
"The best friend isn't the one who wins every game," Cleo said as they rested on the court's edge. "It's the one who keeps playing with you even when you lose."
Lily hugged her new friend. "Will you be here tomorrow?"
Cleo's emerald eyes twinkled. "I'll be here every sunset. But only if you promise to keep playing — win or lose."
Lily ran home with the magical padel ball tucked in her pocket, already counting the hours until she could see her sphinx friend again.
Some adventures, she discovered, don't require traveling far — they just require being brave enough to say hello.
