The Sphinx Who Loved Padel

Lily discovered something extraordinary behind her grandmother's garden shed. A tiny pyramid, no taller than her knees, made of smooth golden stones that seemed to hum in the sunlight. And sitting on top was a sphinx the size of a cat, with emerald-green wings and eyes that sparkled like captured stars.

"I've been waiting twelve hundred years for someone to find me," the sphinx said, stretching his wings. "My name is Phinx. Would you like to play padel?"

Lily's eyes widened. "You know padel?"

"I invented it!" Phinx puffed out his chest. "But I need a partner." He tapped the pyramid with his paw, and suddenly the ground transformed into a perfect court marked with glowing lines. Two palm trees bent gracefully to form the net, their fronds swaying in a breeze that smelled of magic.

They played for hours, using enchanted coconuts as balls and oversized banana leaves as paddles. Phinx was surprisingly good, diving for shots and laughing whenever Lily scored a point.

"What do sphinxes eat?" Lily asked during a break, wiping sweat from her forehead.

Phinx's face lit up. "Spinach! The magical kind, of course. It grows right here." He pointed to a patch of ordinary-looking garden plants. "Grandma's spinach patch—that's why I chose this garden."

Lily plucked a leaf and handed it to him. As Phinx ate, his scales shimmered more brightly. "Thank you, Lily. Friendship makes everything taste better."

Suddenly, the sky darkened. Phinx shrank, his wings fading. "The pyramid's magic is fading," he whispered. "I must return to stasis until someone else believes."

"No!" Lily grabbed his paw. "I believe! I'll come back every single day. We'll play padel, and I'll bring you spinach, and we'll be friends forever!"

Tears rolled down her cheeks onto the golden stones. The pyramid flamed with light. Phinx grew back to full size, his emerald wings spreading wide. The palm trees reached down their fronds to tickle them both.

"Your friendship is stronger than ancient magic," Phinx said, smiling. "And that, dear Lily, is the greatest power of all."

From that day on, every afternoon after school, Lily could be found behind the shed, playing padel with her best friend, eating spinach sandwiches, and learning that the most wonderful discoveries are the ones you share with someone else.
