The Sphinx Who Loved Padel
In the golden sands of Egypt, where the sun painted the dunes orange every morning, lived a very old sphinx. She had the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman, and she had guarded her pyramid for three thousand years.
But the sphinx had a secret. She was terribly lonely.
Every day, travelers came to see the great pyramid. They took photos and ate sandwiches, but none of them ever stayed to talk. The sphinx would try to make friends, but humans always ran away when she spoke. "I'm not scary!" she would call after them. "I just want someone to play with!"
One evening, as the sun began to set, a scruffy little cat trotted out of the desert. He had bright green eyes and fur the color of caramel. Unlike the humans, he didn't run away.
"Hello," said the sphinx, surprised. "Aren't you afraid?"
The cat sat down and began washing his paw. "Nope. You look lonely. I'm Mango."
"I'm the Sphinx," she said. "And yes, I'm very lonely."
Mango looked around. "What do you do for fun around here?"
The sphinx sighed. "Mostly I just watch my pyramid and think about how nice it would be to have a friend. But... I do have something special."
She reached behind a stone and pulled out an old wooden padel racket, covered in hieroglyphics. "I found this years ago. A tourist dropped it. I taught myself to hit stones against the pyramid wall. It's called padel!"
Mango's eyes went wide. "You play padel? That's my favorite game! Show me!"
For the next hour, the sphinx and Mango played padel together. The sphinx would hit the ball, and Mango would chase after it, pouncing and batting it back with his paws. They laughed so hard that the stars seemed to twinkle brighter just to watch them.
"You're wonderful!" the sphinx said, and for the first time in three thousand years, she didn't feel lonely at all.
From that day on, Mango stayed with the sphinx. They played padel every sunset, and sometimes tourists would see them — a magnificent sphinx and a little cat, hitting a ball back and forth against the ancient pyramid wall, both of them grinning.
And the sphinx finally understood something wonderful: the greatest treasure she was guarding wasn't gold or jewels. It was the friendship she had found.
She was never lonely again. Because sometimes, the best friends find you when you least expect them — and they might even be better at padel than you are!
