The Sphinx Who Loved Padel
Lily and Max were the first ones at the community pool that summer morning. The water sparkled like diamonds under the bright sun, and the air smelled of coconut sunscreen and chlorine.
"Race you to the deep end!" Lily called, already running toward the pool deck.
But she stopped suddenly. Behind the pool's storage shed sat the most unusual creature she had ever seen. It looked like a lion with the head of a wise person, golden fur gleaming, and enormous wings folded at its sides.
"A sphinx!" gasped Max, dropping his towel.
The sphinx yawned, stretching its paws. "Hello, young ones. I'm Cleo, and I've been waiting for someone to play padel with me."
"Padel?" Lily tilted her head. "You mean that game with the racquets and the glass court?"
Cleo nodded enthusiastically. Behind the storage shed was indeed a small padel court, painted in bright colors. "In ancient Egypt, we invented this game to teach patience and teamwork. But I haven't played in three thousand years. Everyone always runs away when they see me."
Max's eyes widened. "We're not scared! We love padel!"
For the next hour, the sphinx and the children played the most wonderful game. Cleo was surprisingly good, hitting the ball with her paw while laughing with joy. Her wings fluttered excitedly whenever she scored a point.
"Being different doesn't mean you have to be lonely," Cleo said during a water break. "Sometimes you just have to find the right friends who see your heart, not your appearance."
Lily smiled. "You're not scary at all. You're actually really fun!"
"And now," said Cleo, "for the best part. Winners get a special treat." She led them to the pool, which had transformed. The water now swirled with magical colors, and tiny glowing fish swam in patterns.
"Jump in!" Cleo commanded.
They splashed into the most magical pool ever. The water felt like warm honey, and whenever they laughed, bubbles formed that carried their giggles into the air like music.
"Can you come back tomorrow?" Max asked, floating on his back.
Cleo smiled, her golden eyes twinkling. "Every morning at dawn. Being friends with you two is better than guarding any old treasure. That's the real secret of the sphinx — friendship is the greatest adventure of all."
As they swam and played, Lily and Max knew this summer would be the most magical one ever. Because sometimes, the most wonderful friends are the ones you least expect to find — especially behind a pool shed, holding a padel racquet.
