The Sphinx Who Loved Oranges

In a land of golden sand and pyramids, there lived a young sphinx named Cleo. Unlike all the other sphinxes who guarded ancient treasures and asked difficult riddles, Cleo had a secret. She didn't care about gold or jewels. She loved oranges.

Every day, Cleo would watch from her perch atop a limestone pyramid as children played below. One afternoon, a young boy named Amir tossed something round and bright toward her. Cleo caught it with her paws—a perfect, juicy orange!

"I saw you watching us," Amir called up. "My grandmother says you sphinxes are hungry all the time."

Cleo carefully peeled the orange with her sharp claws. It was the sweetest thing she had ever tasted. From that day on, Amir brought her an orange every afternoon.

One day, Amir arrived looking sad. "The river flooded," he said. "I can't cross to get to the orange grove on the other side."

Cleo thought for a moment. She had noticed something the other sphinxes ignored—a thick, mysterious cable that stretched across the river, hidden in the reeds. It had been there since before anyone could remember.

"Climb on my back," Cleo said.

Amir's eyes widened. "Really?"

Together, they discovered that the ancient cable could support their weight. Cleo spread her golden wings, and with Amir holding onto her fur, they crossed the river using the cable like a tightrope.

On the other side, they found not just orange trees, but a whole abandoned orchard with fruits of every color. The other sphinxes had been guarding it for centuries but forgotten its purpose.

Cleo and Amir became the guardians of the magical orchard. Cleo no longer had to ask riddles to prove her worth. She had found something better—a friend who shared her love of sweet oranges.

And sometimes, when children ask why the sphinx smiles instead of looking stern like the others, Amir just winks and says, "Because she knows that the best treasures aren't gold. They're the things we share with friends."
