The Sphinx Who Loved Orange Peels

Lily was swimming in the crystal blue lake behind her grandmother's cottage when something magical happened. The water rippled around her, shimmering like diamonds in the afternoon sun.

She dove deeper, following a flash of golden light through the mysterious underwater caves. Suddenly, she surfaced in a hidden grotto she'd never seen before — and there, perched on a mossy rock, was the most curious creature she'd ever imagined.

It was a sphinx, but not like the ones in her storybooks. This sphinx had soft golden fur and kind amber eyes. And strangest of all, a bright orange peel sat on the rock beside him.

"I've been waiting for someone brave enough to swim all this way," the sphinx purred gently. His voice sounded like wind chimes.

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"Of course! But I'm terribly lonely." The sphinx nudged the orange peel sadly. "The smell of oranges reminds me of my home in Egypt, where orange trees bloom under desert stars. I miss my friends."

Lily's heart went out to him. She reached into her swimsuit pocket — where she'd tucked a snack earlier — and pulled out a whole, perfect orange.

"Would you like a fresh one?" she asked.

The sphinx's face lit up like sunrise. Lily peeled it slowly, letting the citrus scent fill the magical cave. She shared every sweet segment with her new friend.

"Thank you," the sphinx said, his whiskers twitching with joy. "You've taught me something important, Lily. Loneliness fades when we share what we have, even if it's just a simple orange."

He pressed his warm forehead against hers. "Now I have a friend who isn't afraid of swimming into the unknown. That's the greatest gift of all."

Every summer after that, Lily went swimming in the hidden grotto. She always brought oranges — and sometimes her little brother too, because the best adventures are the ones we share.
