The Sphinx Who Loved Green

Leo hated spinach. Every time his mom served those leafy greens, he made a face.

But then came the day of the Great Backyard Adventure.

Leo was playing near the old stone fountain behind his house when the water suddenly turned bright orange. Bubbles rose to the surface, sparkling like tiny stars.

"Curious," said a voice from behind the rocks.

Leo jumped. A creature stepped forward — a sphinx with golden fur and wise amber eyes. She wasn't scary at all. She looked friendly.

"I'm Cleo," she said. "And I've been waiting for someone brave enough to drink the orange water."

Leo's eyes widened. "Is it magic?"

"Very magic," said Cleo. "But only those who appreciate green things can drink it."

Leo shook his head. "I hate green. No spinach for me!"

Cleo looked sad. "Oh dear. Spinach grows in my magical garden. It gives the sphinxes our wisdom. Without it, we forget our riddles and become regular lions."

Leo felt bad. He didn't want Cleo to lose her wisdom.

"Maybe," Leo said slowly, "maybe I could try just one bite?"

His mom had packed spinach in his lunch. Leo took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and ate a leaf. It wasn't so bad. Actually, it tasted like sunshine and adventure!

Suddenly, Leo could see sparkling trails in the air. He could hear the fountain's song. And when he drank the orange water, he felt smarter, braver, and more alive than ever before.

"Thank you, Leo!" Cleo cheered. "You saved my wisdom!"

Leo smiled. Sometimes the things we think we hate are exactly what we need to be brave.

From that day on, Leo ate his spinach. And sometimes, when the water turned orange, he'd visit Cleo for another magical adventure.
